How To Use The Framework?

This framework was developed as a resource for educational researchers, video creators, and chemistry instructors. Regardless of your purpose, use of the framework will be most effective if you do the following.

  1. Familiarize yourself with the elements of the framework. This can be done by reviewing the Framework Elements or by going through the training materials.  Both of these provide an overview of each section of the framework. The training materials also provide some practice using each component of the framework to evaluate video segments. This practice is particularly important if you plan to use the framework in a research context.
  2. Articulate topic specific criteria for your concept of interest for the following elements: Johnstone’s Triangle, Core Ideas, and Causal Mechanistic Reasoning. You can see examples of these for all of the topics we have evaluated by looking at our Topic Specific Information pages. Articulating in advance what these elements could/should look like and the different ways a topic can be approached (Core Ideas and Causal Mechanistic Reasoning) will make it easier for instructors to find a video that meets their needs or for video creators to think about the best way to present a concept before they start making their video.
  3. If you are using the framework to evaluate a video or find a video for your class or as a template for creating quality videos, consider using the checklist. The checklist is provided to help an individual seeking to use the framework to evaluate an existing video or to help in the planning when creating a video on a specific chemistry topic. For video production suggestions, see Castillo, et al. (2021).
  4. If you are planning to use the framework for research purposes, it is recommended that you turn the framework into a fillable form such as this Google Form. This form can be copied and modified to suit your particular concept and needs. Such a form makes it easier to compile data from your use of the framework to evaluate multiple videos.
